Nanny (Lillian Robertshaw Leonard) made the most wonderful homemade bread. At least, that is what my dad thought. I think it always hurt my mom's feelings a little that my dad raved so much about Nanny's bread. As a kid I still didn't have an appreciation for homemade bread and actually preferred white Wonder bread over the homemade. Hard to believe!!!
What I did love were the fry cakes (scones) that Nanny made when she was making homemade bread for us. I can remember running home from elementary school when we were living at Williams Air Force Base (Arizona) when I knew Nanny was making fry cakes for lunch. It may not have been the healthiest lunch, but it was definitely the most delicious.
Nanny was once teaching me how to make bread, and I forgot to put in the yeast at the "right" time. I was so distraught because I thought I had ruined it. Nanny patiently helped resolve the problem, and the bread was a success. My bread was never as delicious as Nanny's, though.
